Project 1: EFF's Rayhunter

Rayhunter takes a Orbic RC400L and turns it into a Stingray detector. Stingray is an IMSI Catcher, or Cell-Site Simulator. Stingray masquerades as a legitimate cell phone tower. This is a tool of law enforcement. The idea is for cell phones to connect to this CSS & then LEO's would capture your data. There is little public knowledge of how these work. 

Essentially this is a Stingray detector that logs activity. I learned how to load EFF's software onto the RC400L and this was an enjoyable project. Digital privacy is a topic of great interest. See EFF's website for more: EFF's Rayhunter A more detailed blog post:

Welcome and Why

 Welcome! This short form blog is to serve as a hub of sorts for my transition into cybersecurity. My understanding at this time is that: in addition to certifications, projects are a way to help yourself stand out from the crowd. That section of this does not exist yet, but I have already begun saving beginner project ideas. I am sure this will be refined as things progress. I look at improvement and education as an ongoing process, constantly being refined. Knowledge is useless without application.

Overlapping Skillsets

Transitioning to a completely new field has progressed from fear to assessment. It's not that fears magically disappear, but there are constructive and destructive ways to handle fear. I find myself oddly at home during crises unfolding at a high rate of speed. Now that I am over 30 days in, I am identifying what professional skillsets I have that will be useful in cybersecurity.
